Microchipping

Microchipping is mandatory for both dogs and cats. The microchip must comply with ISO 11784/11785 standards and be implanted before rabies vaccination.

Rabies Vaccination

Rabies vaccination is mandatory for both dogs and cats and must be administered at least 21 days before entry into the EU.

Mandatory Deworming (Dogs Only)

All dogs must undergo treatment for tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) before entry into the UK:

  • Treatment must be given 24–120 hours (1–5 days) before entry.
  • The medication must contain praziquantel or another approved active ingredient effective against tapeworms.
  • The treatment details must be clearly recorded in the veterinary health certificate.
  • Without proof of deworming, dogs will not be allowed entry into the UK.
  • Cats do not require deworming.
  • For dogs entering the EU via Finland, Ireland, or Malta, deworming is also mandatory under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/878 of 18 June 2018.
  • For other EU countries, deworming is highly recommended, as customs officers may be unaware of whether it is required for their country.

Fit-to-Fly Certificate

Highly recommended. Must confirm that the pet is clinically healthy for travel.
