Important Changes for Pet Owners Traveling to the USA

As of August 1, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implemented new regulations for importing dogs from rabies-free and low-risk countries. If you plan to transport your pet to the USA, it is essential to comply with these new requirements to avoid delays or entry refusals.

Key Requirements for Pet Entry into the USA

Completion of the CDC Dog Import Form

All dogs traveling from rabies-free or low-risk countries must have a completed CDC Dog Import Form before entering the United States.

Key points:

  • The form must be completed online before travel.
  • Upon submission, a receipt will be emailed to the owner.
  • The receipt must be presented at check-in and upon arrival in the USA.
  • The receipt is valid for six months and can be used for multiple entries if the dog does not visit a high-risk country during that period.

Microchip Requirement

Starting August 1, 2024, all dogs must have a microchip that complies with ISO 11784/11785 standards for identification.

Health and Age Restrictions

  • Dogs must be at least six months old at the time of entry.
  • All dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.

Entry Points

Dogs from rabies-free or low-risk countries can enter through any airport, seaport, or land border crossing in the USA.
